Waterways in the township, such as Plum Creek Bay and LaPlaisance Bay, are home to one of the largest species of aquatic wildflowers, the American Lotus (nelumbo hitea). People from all over the world visit to see these spectacular flowers. During the early 20th-century the interurban railway brought people from Toledo and Detroit on excursions to see the lotus beds. Development of the waterfront, and flooding during the mid-20th-century, drove the lotus to near extinction. Now, due to strict environmental laws, wetlands preservation efforts, and lower water levels on Lake Erie, the lotus beds are back. Huge beds of the showy flower may be seen in mid-summer along East Dunbar Road and on LaPlaisance Bay near Raisin Point.
